IC Students Discover, Research, Create, Perform

Ithaca College Library Exhibit, Fall 2005

To recognize the creative work of our students past and present, the Library offers this "virtual exhibit" of student work, as well as a display case of student work (Library 5th Floor, beside the College Archives office)

Journalism

IC students have been reporting the news on and beyond the College campus since 1926. Here are some examples of currently "published" print and Web efforts. Many other titles, no longer published, are represented in the College Archives' collections.

The Cayugan

Annually since the early 1920s, each Senior Class has prepared a record of its years at the College; earlier years included all College classes. The College Archives has a complete set of this record of student life at IC.

The Ithacan Historical Issues, 1931-2002 Ithacan Online, 1998 to Present

This student newspaper, published since 1931, now also “published” on the Internet, has served the College for 74 years and frequently wins awards as an outstanding college newspaper. It now includes a mini-newsletter from the Student Government Association

Buzzsaw Haircut

Buzzsaw has been providing irreverent commentary on popular culture and investigative journalism in the tradition of Dr. Hunter Thompson several times a year since 1999.

IMPrint

“College life’s Internet magazine’, explores issues from the students’ point of view.

It's Your Business (School of Business newsletter)

Student-produced newsletters, like It’s Your Business, spread the news among students and alumni/ae of the College from "their" schools and departments.

Research

IC students have been conducting and publishing research as part of their education since at least the 1940s.

Graduate Research

  • Graduate students at the College have produced several hundred Masters theses summarizing their research. Their work is available in the College Archives, and usually also in the General Stacks collection.
  • Programs in the School of Communications have prepared educators, media producers, and corporate trainers; their research includes studies of the growth of local cable television and of the Women's Encampment alternative community.
  • Music graduate students have contributed original compositions and analyses of music.
  • Students in Ithaca's newest graduate degree program, Occupational Therapy, are expanding knowledge in their chosen field.
  • Since the post-World War II emphasis on physical fitness in public schools, Ithaca has trained many “phys ed” teachers in techniques for effective teaching, training, and motivating athletes. These theses are regularly requested by other institutions. Some are excellent original research, such as this early study of martial arts-type techniques in strength training, by Osamu Kamiyama.

Undergraduate Research

Undergraduates participate in research projects, with faculty and on their own, resulting in presentations & articles (too many to list-- see College departments' Web sites for current examples).

  • The College Archives has samples of monograph-length research results, such as the Caribbean Anthropology project, as well as student research papers from the College's Gerontology Institute projects.
  • Outstanding undergraduates are encouraged to complete Honors theses, such as this study of children's literature through Harry Potter.

The College also hosts student research journals:

Creating & Performing

In Print

The College Archives is currently displaying samples from several print publications:

  • Stillwater since the 1970s, has been publishing students' writing and photography.
  • Greenwords Journal sponsored by the College's Resource & Environmental Management Program, publishes environmentally-inspired writing and artwork.
  • Numerous other previous publications are available in the College Archives.

We are also featuring the work of students who find their own outlets for publication.

Maria Fiorille, '07, has published two books of poetry (one while she was in high school!) See Her Books @ The Library

James Sigman, '98, published a book of essays and cultural commentary. See His Book @ The Library

Nick Tarant, '00, described his experience as a student leader. See His Book @ The Library

Art & Photography

Communications & Art History students prepare art work and media for exhibition in the Senior Competition (Latest in the Archives' display)

Performance & Media

  • Ithaca College music students perform on campus, nationally, and internationally, like the well-received tours of Ireland (Compact Disc in Multimedia Center & College Archives).
  • Students participate in all activities for many, many theatrical performances (including, of course, musicals). See Theatre Arts Main Stage Season and Photo Gallery of previous seasons.
  • Students in the School of Communications produce radio shows, cable television broadcasts, and video projects (like the annual PreVues competition for best short video/animation, and the projects of the Park Productions unit). See their Student Media page for more information.
