Background Information

Begin your research with sources that will give you background information, define terms and develop a complete picture of your topic. This research will help you to focus on those aspects of the topic that will be of interest to you.

Finding Books

The library catalog will help you identify a variety of print and non-print materials that will be useful to your research. You can search by specific authors or titles or you can do keyword and subject searching. Some specific subjects you can use to begin your search are:

Finding Articles (Online)

Available via the IC library home page using the "Electronic Research & Reference" link. Individual journal articles and papers are not listed in the library catalog and searching for relevant articles can be time consuming. Use databases which search for journal articles, conference proceedings, papers and book reviews. The IC Library does not own all the journals indexed in databases. For assistance identifying where a specific journal may be indexed and/or available in full text call the Reference Desk (274-3890) or go to Serials Solutions.
  • Infotrac OneFile
  • Proquest Direct -includes ABI/Inform, Periodcal Research Abstracts, and such papers as the Wall Street Journal and NY Times
  • Business and Company Resource Center-search by S.I.C./N.A.I.C.S. codes, company or industry name. Includes rankings, articles on market share, etc.
  • Business Source Premier -combination of trade and scholarly journals on a wide variety of business topics. Includes company and industry analysis.
  • Lexis/Nexis-has many different sections which are helpful. Make sure to try the both the News and Business sections
  • Science Direct-scholarly articles on marketing topics.
  • New York Times-historical coverage. (1851-2001). More current issues also available via Lexis/Nexis. or ProQuest Direct
  • Wall Street Journal- historical coverage (1889-1987). More current available via Proquest Direct
  • STAT-USA -aimed mostly at the export and import markets. Information on various products and services as well as countries.
  • PsycInfo-find citations to articles looking at the psychological aspects of marketing.
  • Psycarticles-covers about 50 full-text journals which might contain articles dealing with the psychological aspects of marketing
