Library Resources and Methods of Research

Floor Locations

Finding the call number of a book or other library material is only the first step in locating it. The next step is finding out where in the library it will be. To figure that out it helps to know some of the peculiarities about the building, the Gannett Center, that houses the library.

The Gannett Center

First of all, the Gannett Center is not just the library. The library is in the Gannett Center, but so are several other college departments and resources. Because the Gannett Center houses more than the library, one of the things that confuses many students (and faculty as well) is the numbering of the floors. The main floor of the library is on the second floor of the Gannett Center. The Handwerker Gallery, the Career Planning Center, offices and classrooms for Art History and Anthropology are all located on the first floor of the building. They have separate entrances from the library.

Entrances

The main entrance to the library opens onto the second floor of the building. This is not the only entrance to the library. The Gannett Center and the Music Building are connected. From the Third Floor of the Gannett Center, which houses the Music collection and the Multimedia Center, there is an entrance and exit to the Music building.

Floors

The library is found on the second through fifth floors of the Gannett Center.

The Main or Second Floor

On the main floor of the library are the Circulation and Reserves Services and Reference Services (the reference desk, the reference collection, and reference librarian offices), microfilm materials and readers, and popular reading (newspapers, popular periodicals, and best selling books).

Books with call numbers starting with call numbers A through G are found on this floor. Periodicals are also found on the Fourth Floor, both bound periodicals and current issues of periodicals, except those found in the popular periodicals area of the Second Floor.

The Fifth Floor has books wth call numbers starting with call numbers H through L, and N through Z. At the end of the regular collection is the collection of Oversized Books. The books ribbon around, so the end of the regular collection and Oversized Books are in the middle of the floor. Also on the floor is the Archives office.
