For the past year writing professor Katharyn Machan has been directing a project for the Linden Center for Creativity and Aging: a New York Statewide poetry contest for high school students on the theme, "In Honor of Our Elders." IC's own Paul Hamill, current Tompkins County Poet Laureate, and Longview resident and poet Annette Corth, were contest judges.
New York teenagers in grades 9-12 were asked to write poems (of any length and in any form) which celebrate their family members, friends, or role models who have reached the age of 60 or beyond. The contest offered first, second, and third prizes of $300, $200, and $100, with two $50 honorable-mention awards. Winning students will be invited to read their poems at a reception to be held at Longview on August 30. Faculty members from the College writing department have been invited to share their poetry. Paul Hamill and Annette Corth will read original works.
