 Selected Speakers and Presenters from Past Conferences
Patty Brown
Patricia Brown, M.S. and B.S. in art education from State University College at
Buffalo, has taught art for 22 years in central New York, currently at Lansing
High School. Several years ago she began to teach digital imaging and to develop
curriculum that explores the relationship of media and visual literacy. This curriculum
explores ways in which visual artists incorporate media images in their work.
Jane Koestler
Jane Koestler, B.A. from Cornell University, M.S. from SUNY College at Cortland,
and consultant for Project Look Sharp, has taught elementary and middle school
for 15 years in Ithaca, NY. During a sabbatic from teaching in 2002-2003, she
created curriculum for the Ithaca City School District that integrates elementary
health and media literacy, that has now been adopted across the entire district
at the elementary level.
Karl Madeo
Karl Madeo, Audiovisual Production and Technology Specialist, also teaches English,
social studies, and video production at the Alternative Community School in Ithaca.
Faith Rogow, Ph. D.
Faith Rogow is past President of the Alliance for a Media Literate America and
owner of Insighters Educational Consulting. She has authored extensive teacher
and discussion guides, trainer manuals, web materials, and media literacy materials
for a variety of children’s programs. In nearly 20 years as a media educator,
she has trained thousands of teachers, students, child-care providers, and parents
to understand and harness the power of television.
Cyndy Scheibe, Ph. D.
The founder and Executive Director of Project Look Sharp at Ithaca College, Cyndy
Scheibe has been working with K-12 teachers and teacher education faculty around
issues of media literacy integration for nearly eight years. She has a Ph.D. in
developmental psychology from Cornell University, and teaches in the psychology
department at Ithaca College.
Roger Sevilla
Roger Sevilla is the Technology Integration Coordinator for Project Look Sharp
and an instructional technology staff developer with the Ithaca City School District.
He has more than 12 years of experience working with teachers to effectively integrate
technology with teaching and learning.
Jeff Spence
Jeff Spence teaches English, ESL, and media production at Ithaca High School in
Ithaca, New York. He received an award from the New York State Education Department
for innovative teaching using telecommunications and recently has acquired his
New York State administrative certification. He has trained hundreds of students
and teachers in video production and has directed media production camps at national
conferences.
Chris Sperry
Director of curriculum and staff development for Project Look Sharp, Chris Sperry
has taught social studies, visual sociology, and media production at the middle
and high school levels for the past 25 years. He has developed specific media
literacy curriculum materials around the study of Africa and Native American cultures,
global issues, and media coverage of war. He is the author of Project Look Sharp’s
two nationally acclaimed curriculum kits, Media Construction of War and
Media Construction of Presidential Campaigns.
