Summer Institute
Dates: July 29th - August 2nd 2013
Summer Institute Overview (Download the flyer above for more details about the institute and how to register.) This is an intensive, week-long media literacy course for teachers, support staff,
college faculty, and other professionals working with students in an educational
setting. Participants receive training in the theory and practice of media literacy,
learn applications for digital technology, and work individually with a Project
Look Sharp "coach" to develop and implement a media literacy integration
project. Each of the morning sessions are presentation-style format, and the afternoons are hands-on production (using a variety of 21st century learning tools and technologies).

2. Accommodations: We recommend that attendees stay at one of the hotels listed below at a cost of around $120.00 a night. Alternatively, you may stay on campus in the dormitories at a much lower rate. Please be sure to select the accommodations link below for more information on the dormitory housing experience.
3. Transportation: If you are commuting, you will be able to park your car on campus at no charge in the visitor parking lot. If you are staying at one of the hotels and do not have a vehicle, please contact the hotel directly about their transportation options. Ithaca College has a bus system that runs to various destinations around Ithaca, however the summer hours are much more limited than usual. The best option is to ensure that you have a vehicle for ease of transporttion. The Ithaca College campus is about 4 miles from downtown.
4. Meals: A light continental breakfast is offered every morning (Monday through Friday) which includes yogurt, bagels, fruit, and coffee. We also provide a lunch on Friday afternoon. You will need to budget for lunch throughout the week except for Friday. The group of attendees usually walk to the campus center and spend approximately $8.00 to $10.00 per lunch. You must also budget for a week of dinners. Most attendees return to their hotels or dormitoriees and order-in, or attend group dinners in downtown Ithaca. For two nights during the week our trainers Cyndy Scheibe and Chris Sperry host and coordinate group dinners at local restaurants.. This often results in people ride-sharing to the restaurant and networking during a lovely evening meal.

"[The individual coaching was] invaluable. This piece makes the cost absolutely reasonable, a bargain in fact. The coaching sessions were completely dedicated, no lip service, but real, honest intellectual expertise. PLS is one of the best professional moves I have ever made. My supervisor was impressed with how much I was impressed, and asked me to inquire about in-service training or possible site visits." -Ted Leaf, High School English Teacher
"This course was the 'missing piece' to my Masters in Library and Information Science Education! Top shelf!"
-Rick Gridley, BOCES Library Media Specialist
“[Individual coaching is] what makes this workshop so effective. [Chris and Cyndy] are both skilled in providing guidance and feedback (often through questions, which makes it exceptionally powerful).”
-Director of Elementary and Secondary Education, Wells College
“I appreciated all the questions and ideas that [Chris Sperry] presented because they made my lesson plans so much richer and just more engaging for students. I’m excited about my lesson plan – I can’t wait to implement everything that I’ve learned from Chris and Cyndy..”
