Ithaca, NY--"Dance Me Outside," the story of how a murder affects the residents of an Indian reservation in northern Ontario, will be shown at Ithaca College on Wednesday, November 29. The 1994 movie, winner of two major Canadian film awards, will begin at 7:00 p.m. in Textor 102. The screening, supported by the Office of Multicultural Affairs and the Department of Anthropology, is free and open to the public.
Directed by Bruce McDonald and produced by Norman Jewison, the script was adapted from a collection of stories by W. P. Kinsella, whose novel, "Shoeless Joe," inspired the movie, "Field of Dreams." "This is a world of real characters, not Hollywood stereotypes," wrote a reviewer for "Canadian Movie Guide." "These people live real modern lives and struggle with the contradictions of wrestling with their cultural traditions. This is a film about empowerment, about growing maturity in youth, about the sinuous strength of female sensitivity and its ability to overshadow male brute force. This is a sophisticated film with high entertainment values." "Dance Me Outside" was the opening night film at the 1994 Toronto International Film Festival and won two Genie Awards for best editing and best sound in 1995. The Genie Awards are presented annually by the Academy of Canadian Cinema to recognize and celebrate Canada's cinematic achievements.
