Requirements per Instrument

Drum set is only available for B.M. in Jazz Studies and B.M. in Sound Recording Technology.

 Requirements for:

Classical Audition

     Marimba

  1. Two-mallet étude, comparable to or chosen from the following selections of Modern School for Marimba, by Morris Goldenberg: page 28, page 53 ("Exercise in 9/8 Rhythm"), page 55, page 60, or page 61
  2. All major and minor scales and arpeggios in all keys

     Timpani

  1. Two-drum étude, comparable to or chosen from the following selections of Modern Method for Timpani, by Saul Goodman: exercises 26-58 (pages 46-60)

     Snare Drum

  1. Étude comparable to or chosen from the following selections of Modern School for Snare Drum, by Morris Goldenberg: pages 44-51

Jazz Audition

  1. Perform a blues selection, jazz standard, and ballad. Please choose selections from the provided list. For each selection, play time for the head, play time for one chorus, trade fours for one chorus, return to the head, and end accordingly.
  2. Demonstrate proficiency in various jazz styles and tempos, including:
    • Slow, medium, and fast swing
    • 3/4 swing
    • Shuffle
    • Bossa nova
    • Samba
    • Rock/funk
    • Brush technique
  3. Sight-reading

NOTE: Drum set and cymbals will be provided. You may supply your own cymbals if preferred.

 

Requirements for:

Candidates whom are selected for an on-campus audition must be prepared to demonstrate a proficiency in:

  1. Various styles and tempos, including:
    • Rock/funk
    • Slow, medium, and fast swing
    • 3/4 swing
    • Shuffle
    • Bossa nova
    • Samba
    • Brush technique
  2. Sight-reading, including charts and notation in various styles.

A bass player will be provided for the demonstration of all styles. Applicants are encouraged to bring in charts (lead sheets) to perform with the bass player.
