Electric Bass

Requirements for B.M. degrees into jazz studies program only

Two pieces from the standard jazz repertoire (e.g. Gershwin, Rogers and Hart, Parker, Davis, Ellington): perform the melody, at least two choruses of a "walking" bassline, and improvise a jazz solo for two choruses of the tune.

Diatonic major scales with corresponding modes; all scales should be played with alternating right-hand fingering. Familiarity with minor scales. Sight-reading and improvisation of bass lines in the jazz idiom.

Optional: One classical piece, comparable to NYSSMA grade IV, for cello or bass.
