Audition Guidelines


Bachelor of Music in Combination with an Outside Field

Students perform an audition on their major performing instrument or voice and take a short sight singing exam. Students are encouraged to declare an outside field during their freshman year.


Bachelor of Music in Composition

Composition candidates must submit at least two original sample compositions, with recordings if available. They will take a short sight singing exam, and must schedule a personal interview with the composition faculty. Audition for study on a major instrument is optional.


Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies

Students perform an audition on their major performing instrument or voice and take a short sight singing exam. In addition, instrumentalists must perform three jazz standards that demonstrate style and improvisation ability.

Bachelor of Music in Music Education

Students perform an audition on their major performing instrument or voice and take a short sight singing exam.


Bachelor of Music in Performance

Students perform an audition on their major performing instrument or voice and take a short sight singing exam. Other music majors may opt to enter the performance degree program after one or two semesters by auditioning for a performance faculty committee.


Bachelor of Music in Performance and Music Education

Students perform an audition on their major performing instrument or voice and take a short sight singing exam. Music education students may opt to enter the performance and music education degree program after one or two semesters by auditioning for a performance faculty committee.

Bachelor of Music in Theory

Students perform an audition on their major performing instrument or voice and take a short sight singing exam. Students wishing to be theory majors must schedule an audition and interview with the chair of the music theory and history department sometime during their freshman year. Formal entry to this program usually occurs in the sophomore year.


Bachelor of Arts in Music

Students perform an audition on their major performing instrument or voice and take a short sight singing exam.


Bachelor of Music in Sound Recording Technology

Students perform an audition on their major performing instrument or voice and take a short sight singing exam. Applicants for this program must have an on-campus audition and a personal interview with the faculty and staff who teach in the recording program. Applicants must submit a letter of recommendation that supports their technical aptitude. Ideally, applicants should have completed advanced mathematics (e.g. trigonometry, calculus), and physics courses. Tape recordings illustrating the applicants' recording expertise may be submitted, but are not required. The Bachelor of Music in Sound Recording Technology is designed for freshmen entry only. One cannot transfer into this major from another academic institution or from another major in the School of Music or in the college.


Undeclared Major

Students perform an audition on their major performing instrument or voice and take a short sight singing exam. Students normally declare their specific major during the first academic year.


Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theater

Students complete a voice audition and an acting audition. Arrangements for an audition must be made through the Department of Theatre Arts.
