General Studio Information
This is the place to find information on the bassoon studio, auditions, applications, classes, materials and more.
SIZE: The Bassoon Studio at Ithaca College normally consists of from 10 to 12 students during most semesters. See Current Students for information on the individuals in our studio.
LESSONS: Those in the Performance and 4 1/2 Year programs get a one-hour private lesson each week. Music Education majors get a one-half hour lesson per week. In addition to the private lesson, each student participates in a weekly one hour Repertoire Class. Repertoire Class serves a variety of functions. See the current repertoire schedule.
REED MAKING: We spend quite a bit of time during the Fall semester on Reed Making. Each bassoon student at Ithaca College plays their first jury (the final exam in applied lessons) on a reed of their own making. "Reed Buddies" are assigned at the beginning of each Fall semester. Reed Buddies are required to work together several times a week on various aspects of reed making. This is a time to share knowledge and ideas. We have a room designated as a reed making room, which is equipped with a profiler and shaper.
CONTRA: Ithaca College owns two contra bassoons. Each student is required to play contra bassoon in a large ensemble for at least one semester.
AUDITIONS AND APPLICATIONS: For your entrance audition into Ithaca College you will be asked to play two to three contrasting pieces, etudes, or movements. You may also be asked to play scales and to sightread. See the Music School Home Page for more information on auditions and applications.
