Ten songs of the year

THE TEN SONGS

Every year the jazz department creates a list of ten standards which all jazz students at Ithaca College must thoroughly memorize (the melody, chords, and often with the lyrics and all 12 keys).  These songs are subsequently used as study material for jazz repertoire and jazz arranging classes, and are played in private jazz lessons, combos, ensembles and jam sessions. 

For the 2011-12 school year, the ten songs are:

• Chega De Saudade (a.k.a. No More Blues) by Antonio Carlos Jobim
• Cherokee by Ray Noble
• Embraceable You by George and Ira Gershwin
• Just One Of Those Things by Cole Porter
• My Romance by Richard Rogers and Lorenz Hart
• A Night In Tunisia by Dizzy Gillespie
• Sophisticated Lady by Duke Ellington
• Willow Weep For Me by Ann Ronnell

In 2010-11, the ten songs were:

• All Of Me, by Seymour Simons and Gerald Marks
• Autumn Leaves, by Joseph Kosma and Johnny Mercer
• I Got Rhythm, by George Gershwin (along with Charlie Parker's Anthropology)
• Love Is Here To Stay, by George and Ira Gershwin
• Satin Doll, by Duke Ellington & Billy Strayhorn
• Segment, by Charlie Parker
• Star Dust, by Hoagy Carmichael and Mitchell Parish
• Stompin' at the Savoy, by Benny Goodman, Chick Webb, Edgar Sampson and Andy Razaf
• The Girl From Ipanema, by Antonio Carlos Jobim
• The Way You Look Tonight, by Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields

In 2009-10, the songs were:

• Sweet Georgia Brown
