During the more than 30 years I have spent at Ithaca College as a faculty member and administrator, it has been my pleasure to be part of one of the outstanding music programs in the country. As you learn more about our program, I hope you will sense the special qualities of our school, which blends professional musical experience with strong academic programs in an attractive campus setting.

Ithaca's excellent music reputation is a direct result of its resident faculty members, who combine distinguished backgrounds as performers and scholars with a dedication to teaching. When you visit the campus and meet the faculty, you will sense the emphasis they place on sharing in the creative experience to help refine and develop each student's natural talent.

The rich variety of performance opportunities at Ithaca also plays a key role in developing students' musical talents. Over 300 concerts and recitals are performed each year in Ford Auditorium and the Hockett Family Recital Hall, reflecting the vitality of an exceptional range of instrumental and choral ensembles as well as the skills of individual faculty and student musicians. The Whalen Center for Music, which opened in 1999, is one of the most beautiful and complete music buildings under one roof in the country, providing faculty and students with a state-of-the-art facility that inspires teaching and performing.

Alumni from the School of Music have distinguished themselves as teachers on every level, as performers in major orchestras and opera houses throughout the world and as arts administrators in a wide variety of musical applications. It has been particularly gratifying for me to participate in the development of so many of these rewarding musical careers. I hope your choice of a college will be based on many of the same factors that led our alumni to select Ithaca. I know they look back on their years here with fond remembrance and appreciation for the thorough preparation they received.
