Audition Requirements
Master
of Music in Performance Candidates
must exhibit the equivalent preparation to that required for the Bachelor of Music
in Performance at Ithaca College and give evidence of being equipped to perform
successful recitals during the period of study for the degree program.
Prepare the following for a twenty-minute audition Performed from Memory:
-
Elements
of technical preparation such as scales and arpeggios. -
One complete
sonata, concerto, or suite. -
Two
or three additional works representing various periods of standard repertoire
(Baroque, Classic, Romantic, or Contemporary). These may be single movements of
longer works. All
Other Degrees Prepare
the following for a fifteen-minute audition: -
Elements
of technical preparation such as scales and arpeggios. -
One complete
sonata, concerto, or suite. -
Two
or three additional works representing various periods of standard repertoire
(Baroque, Classic, Romantic, or Contemporary). These may be single movements of
longer works.
Master of Music

A florid or technical work such as an aria from a Baroque oratorio, opera, or
cantata.

An aria from standard opera or oratorio repertoire. Oratorio literature may be
performed with scores.

Additional selections, as needed, to demonstrate the candidate's competence in
English, French, German, and Italian.
All
Other Degrees
Prepare the following for a fifteen-minute audition:
- A florid or technical
work such as an aria from a Baroque oratorio, opera, or cantata.

An aria from standard opera or oratorio repertoire.

Additional selections, as needed, to demonstrate the candidate's competence in
English, French, German, and Italian.
- At
least two pieces must be memorized. In conformity with professional practices,
oratorio literature may be performed with scores.
Vocalists must be accompanied.
Vocalists
may bring their own accompanists, or an Ithaca College accompanist can be provided,
if requested, for a fee of $30 (nonrefundable). If an Ithaca College accompanist
is used, -
You
must send a copy of the music, along with a check or money order made payable
to Ithaca College School of Music. -
The
check and music must arrive at least two weeks prior to the audition. -
Send all
material to: Linda Spencer, Graduate Secretary, Ithaca College School of Music,
Ithaca, NY 14850. -
You
must bring the original music on your audition day, because the copies
of the music sent earlier will be destroyed. -
If
Linda Spencer does not hear from you,
she will assume you are bringing your own accompanist. Prerecorded
accompaniment is not acceptable.
Master
of Music in Performance Candidates

from the standard orchestral repertoire.
Percussionists
must demonstrate ability on snare drum, mallet instruments, and timpani.

Other Degrees Prepare
the following for a fifteen-minute audition: - Elements
of technical preparation such as scales and arpeggios.
- One
complete sonata, concerto, or suite.
- Two
or three additional works representing various periods of standard repertoire
(Baroque, Classic, Romantic, or Contemporary). These may be single movements of
longer works.
Percussionists must
demonstrate ability on snare drum, mallet instruments, and timpani. Instrumentalists
should not use an accompanist.

Applicants
are required to submit an initial screening videotape of a performing group they
have conducted recently. It is preferred that the tape be a rehearsal and the
conducting applicant be facing the cameras. The purpose of this tape is to aid
in the evaluation of the candidate's conducting competency. -
Finalists
will be invited for an in-person special audition which will include an interview,
live conducting in the major area, and performance in the principal performing
area (refer to "All Other Degrees" in performance for appropriate audition material).

Applicants must submit at least three representative original scores, and recordings if available. Scores should exhibit a variety of instrumentation and/or vocal forces.

After an initial screening, selected candidates will be invited for an interview with the composition faculty (usually scheduled on School of Music audition days).
