With new facilities, a new faculty member, and a new support staff member, the sound recording technology program has been refreshed and is offering students state-of-the-art opportunities. The senior-year internship in the recording business, along with the program's rigorous preparation and hands-on experience from the beginning, has helped students get jobs in the business right out of college. All of the students who graduated last spring with the bachelor of music in sound recording technology are employed in fine recording studios.
Some of the studios where IC graduates have worked include Soundtrack in New York City, Acoustic in Chicago, Georgetown Masters, Euphonix, Sound One, PostWorks, Glyph Technologies, Avcon, and Dale Pro Audio, and some of the graduates' positions have included audio network specialist, studio musician in Nashville, and touring sound technician.
Both of the recording studios in the Whalen Center have been redesigned with extensive new equipment: large flat-panel screens have replaced monitors worn from years of constant use, a new 48-channel SSL Duality/Pro Tools HD console has been installed, Benchmark converters and microphone preamplifiers were added, and 11 Pro Tools production rigs were purchased. The studios have incorporated Energy Star technology to reduce energy use as well as reduce wasted heat and noise. Other "green" techniques used in the upgrade were sourcing wire purchases locally and scheduling deliveries of equipment on scheduled truck runs. Besides the increased functionality, the studios are also more teaching friendly.
Alex Perialas, now in his second year in the faculty position in the sound recording technology program, holds a bachelor’s degree in television-radio from the College's Roy H. Park School of Communications and has owned and operated Pyramid Sound in Ithaca for the past 30 years. At Pyramid he has engineered, mixed, produced, and/or mastered hundreds of recordings in all genres, including a number of gold and platinum recordings.
Brian Dozoretz has his first year as manager of music recording technical support under his belt and has put his mark on the studios. He has more than 13 years of experience in the music recording industry and has had projects nominated for Grammy Awards for the last five years. His roles have included engineer, producer, studio manager, and technician. He has collaborated with world-class artists, producers, and engineers on Grammy-winning projects. Brian graduated from the Park School in 1994 with a bachelor of science degree in audio production. In addition to his recording expertise, he is an actively performing and recording bassist.
