On Sunday, January 18 at 2:15 pm, Elizabeth Simkin, IC’s professor of cello, will present a performance of J. S. Bach’s complete six suites for solo cello at the Nina K. Miller Hospicare Center on East King Road.

Simkin will perform suite numbers 3, 2, and 4 at 2:15, followed by a wine and cheese reception between 4 and 5 p.m.  At 5 p.m., suites 5, 1, and 6 will be performed.

According to Simkin, the Bach suites are the center of a cellist’s repertoire.  They develop from being comparatively straight forward and musically and technically simple, to transcending what anyone would expect from within the limits of a cello. The range of expression can move from almost orchestral implications to the intimacy of a single note.  The expressive range of the cello is maximized by Bach in his six suites and certainly has not been surpassed in nearly the last 300 years.

“When I have played Bach in the Great Room, it just feels rights because I believe in the beauty of the music and I know that it's heard by people in a receptive state,” said Simkin. “It's the music I've been working on my entire life.”

“Playing them, hearing them, experiencing them all in one day, the language surrounds you in a way that you can't experience with just one suite,” she added. “When taking them in together, that distinct beauty of each is much more apparent than when juxtaposed against other composers.”

For this special event, donations are welcome. All proceeds support Hospicare’s Music Program. To reserve a seat, please call Stephanie at Hospicare at 272-0212.
