Frank Diaz, OrchestraFrank Diaz, Orchestra
Assistant Professor of Music Education, University of Oregon

Dr. Frank M. Diaz is an assistant professor of music education at the University of Oregon, where he coordinates the string music education program, and teaches courses in music education, psychology of music, and music research. He also serves as Music Director and Conductor of the Corvallis Youth Symphony in Corvallis, Oregon. Before his appointment at Oregon, Diaz served as a conductor for numerous ensembles, including the University Symphony, Philharmonia, and New Music Ensemble at Florida State University, and the Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra at the University of South Florida. He began his career as a public school teacher, teaching instrumental music for students at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. During his tenure as a public school teacher, Diaz’s groups were invited to perform at prestigious venues, including the International Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, and the Music Educators National Conference. 


Along with his work as an educator and conductor, Diaz is a regular presenter at international, national, and regional conferences, and has articles published or forthcoming in prominent peer-reviewed journals, including Psychology of Music, Journal of Research in Music Education, Journal of Music Teacher Education, Update: Applications of Research in Music Education, Contributions to Music Education, Journal of Band Research, and Missouri Journal of Research in Music Education. His work has also been featured in several media outlets, including Science Daily and the Huffington Post. He is currently President-Elect of the Oregon Music Education Association, serves as Chair of the National Association for Music Education’s Affective Response Special Research Interest Group, and is Co-Chair of the Society for Music Teacher Education for the Oregon Music Education Association.


Dr. Diaz holds degrees in Music Education from Florida State University (B.M.E. and Ph.D), and in Conducting and Music Performance from the University of South Florida (M.M.E).
