Jessica Portillo is an assistant professor of music theory at Ithaca College. A native Texan, she earned her undergraduate degree in music theory and composition from the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas (B.M.) and her masters in music theory from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX (M.M.). Ms. Portillo is currently pursuing her Ph.D. at the University of Connecticut in music theory and history.
As a composer, Ms. Portillo has premiered choral, orchestral and chamber works in Texas and has had several taken on tour by the University of the Incarnate Word. She is the recipient of the Joseph Serna Arts Award in Composition. Ms. Portillo has also directed a number of choral ensembles including liturgical choirs.
Ms. Portillo’s research interests lie primarily in late-Romantic and early 20th-century music, including transformation theory, atonal theory, and voice leading in atonal music. She also enjoys research in the pedagogy of music theory.
