Michael Treat is a music educator, trumpet player and composer/arranger in Ithaca, NY. He grew up in Vermont before coming to Ithaca College to study music education in 2000. While at Ithaca he discovered a passion for studying and implementing the pedagogy of improvisation for young musicians. He has since had a diverse teaching career working with children and young adults in a variety of musical disciplines.
Michael has recently returned to Ithaca where he was previously the Director of Music for the EAC Montessori School of Ithaca. During his tenure at EACMSI, Michael and his students were invited to present to the Ithaca College Music Education Seminar as well as for a CMENC workshop in improvisation. He also worked with Ithaca College student teachers and directed ensembles in Syracuse as part of the Signature Syracuse program.
After completing his M.M. at Ithaca College in 2007, Michael moved to the Hudson Valley to teach in the Kingston City Schools in Kingston, NY. He worked in the Kingston Middle Schools directing bands and teaching brass instruments. He also directed jazz ensembles and student combos at both the middle and high school level. In recent years he has presented at the Ulster County Music Educators, co-directed the Kingston Jazz Invitational, guest conducted the NYSSMA Zone 3 Junior High Area All-State Band and founded the Collaborative Instrumental Project, bringing together young music students with college music majors. He is currently director of bands at DeWitt Middle School, director of the Ithaca High School Jazz Ensemble, trumpet instructor for the Ithaca Summer Music Academy Intermediate Division and on the faculty of Opus Ithaca.
As a performer, Michael leads his own jazz quintet, the MTQ. He has performed at the Blue Note and Iridium Jazz Club and played locally and internationally with premier ensembles such as the Greater New York Wind Symphony and Hudson Valley Jazz Orchestra. He has previously been a member of the Swamp College Brass Quintet, Ithaca Ageless Jazz Band, and Music Director for the Ti-Ahwaga Community Players. He currently plays in a variety of freelance settings from brass quintets to pit orchestras and is sought out as private trumpet instructor.
In addition to his passion for playing and teaching music, Michael is an active outdoorsman and triathlete.
