Will Cicola recently completed his Doctorate of Musical Arts in Clarinet Performance at Michigan State University. He previously earned a Master's of Music degree in Clarinet Performance at Miami University (OH) and a Bachelor of Music degree in Clarinet Performance and Music Education from Ithaca College. His teachers have included Caroline Hartig, Michele Gingras, Richard Faria, and Jack Howell.
Will has been an active performer and teacher throughout central New York, southwestern Ohio, and central Michigan. In addition to his private clarinet studio in East Lansing, Will has served as a graduate assistant in the Michigan State University clarinet program, teaching clarinet methods classes and private lessons to both clarinet majors and nonmajors, and as a graduate assistant in recording and electronic music at Miami University, where he trained engineers and managed the recording studio. He also works as a recording engineer in the Michigan State University Recording Services department and at the Michigan State University Community Music School.
Will is also an active performer, having performed with the Lansing Symphony, the Jackson Symphony, the Battle Creek Symphony, the Alma Symphony, and the Michigan State Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestras, as well as a variety of chamber ensembles and pit orchestras in Boston, Chicago, East Lansing, Oxford (Ohio), Ithaca, and Vianden (Luxembourg). He is a strong advocate for new music, regularly premiering and commissioning works by a number of young composers from across the world.
Will is highly involved in world music and community outreach, having studied and performed klezmer music since his first months at Ithaca College. He was the assistant director of the Ithaca College Klezmorim, and founded and directed both the Miami University Klezmer Ensemble and Slivovitz. Will is also a member of Wisaal, a world music fusion ensemble that combines Arabic, klezmer, Indian, and American folk traditions. Both Slivovitz and Wisaal have performed at a wide variety of university and community functions throughout Michigan and the surrounding states. Will’s klezmer teachers have included Joel Rubin and Kurt Bjorling.
