Visiting Artists

Each year a number of guest artists give classes, perform, and coach students. Composers, conductors, and artists such as Emanuel Ax, Elmar Oliviera, Janos Starker, Vladimir Feltsman, Stephen Hough, Jaime Laredo, Leigh Howard Stevens, Rhythm and Brass, New York Voices, and the Guarneri Quartet have come to campus to perform and instruct students through the school’s master classes. The Karel Husa Visiting Professor in Composition series allows student composers to work with leading composers such as John Corigliano, Robert Beaser, Christopher Rouse, Shulamit Ran, Chen Yi, Michael Colgrass, and Stephen Hartman, and the music school ensembles perform the works of these composers during their visits.

Concert Series

The Ithaca College Concerts series brings outstanding and world-renowned musicians to campus each year. Emanuel Ax, Midori, Edgar Meyer, Santiago Rodriguez, Musicians from Marlboro, Chanticleer, the Ying Quartet, Frederic Chiu, SoVoSó, Bolcom and Morris, Nexus, and James Campbell are among the many artists who have performed on campus.

International Options

The Ithaca Conservatory – the original School of Music – began with a number of faculty recruited from Europe, an international flavor that continues today. Our current faculty includes many foreign-born individuals, and many others have established performing, scholarly, and pedagogical connections.

Each year numerous music students spend either the fall or spring semester at Ithaca College’s London Center, where they receive private instruction on their instrument or voice and attend classes that focus on British culture, history, and politics. Internships are also available through the Center, many of which include activities related either to music education or the professional music scene in London.

An exchange program with the Irish World Music Centre at the University of Limerick continues to provide students with opportunities to study in Ireland, primarily through two scholarships each summer to the Blas International Summer School for Irish Traditional Music and Dance. Recent tours by the Choir, Chamber Orchestra, and Women's Chorale have enhanced this association with our Irish colleagues.

Additional foreign travel by School of Music students has recently included summer, semester-long, and academic-year experiences in Australia, Austria, Ghana, Italy, and South Africa.

Special Events

Several special events have become annual traditions at the School of Music. The Choral Composition Contest and Festival (sponsored jointly by Ithaca College and the Theodore Presser Company), the Piano Competition, the Wind and Percussion Invitational Festival, and the New York State School Music Association Area All-State have given high school students and guest artists the opportunity to visit the campus, perform and participate in master classes, and listen to concerts.
