Scott Baker ’06 and James Walker ‘08 worked with biology professor Jason Hamilton on inoculating logs to start up a mushroom farm, an example of a non-timber forest product. They researched possible options and decided on Shiitake Mushrooms.
There are many possibilities for other research opportunities to further investigate non-timber forest products and the cultivation of sustainable natural resources.
These include:
Bottling spring water
Maple syrup production
Growing ginseng
Growing blueberries
