The South Hill Natural Area is a multiple use area. The Blue and Gold Trails allow for a number of recreational uses. Many athletes, including Cross Country use the area to train and practice. Many classes use this area as an educational tool and many Ithaca College students take advantage of the walking trails. The Ithaca College Observatory is located on this site.
In addition to utilizing the area for recreational and educational purposes, the rare plant communities are attractive opportunities for research. The South Hill Swamp on this site was selected as a Unique Natural Area by Tompkins County. The Perched Swamp White Oak Swamp features a land structure reminiscent of a bowl that causes seasonal flooding.
Classes interested in using the South Hill Natural Area for course activities, please contact Jason Hamilton so we can coordinate activities. This will also allow us to document the ways in which the South Hill area is meeting our educational mission.
Hunting is NOT allowed on South Hill.
