Sandra Steingraber, distinguished scholar in residence, Department of Environmental Studies and Science
Steingraber was quoted in an article regarding an agreement reached on a hydraulic fracturing (fracking) bill in Illinois that would create standards for drilling wells and require water testing before and after fracking begins. “When you look under fracking’s hood, you find terrifying problems because behind the hard sell and the soothing promise that you’ve heard, this contraption is unsafe at any speed,” she said. Steingraber urged lawmakers to follow New York’s lead and adopt a moratorium on fracking until the potential environmental and health impacts are studied.
