It’s no surprise that tipping rises and falls with the economy, but McCall explained to the New York Times how corporate changes have also affected those who make their living by tips. Per-diem expense allowances have not risen with inflation at most companies, he said, understandably putting a damper on how much business travelers are likely to tip.
