Lis Maurer, LGBT program director
YNN interviewed Maurer about the findings from the latest census data that more same-sex households were reported in New York state than ever before. Maurer says that these findings may give same-sex couples a greater feeling of security in their neighborhoods. “I can open a newspaper and see a snapshot of the city of Ithaca, of Newfield, of Groton, of Ulysses and say here are the different demographics of all different kinds of households in New York State and in my local community,” she said. “That shows me there are people like me doing this. There are successful people who live in my community who have relationships who feel comfortable reporting those relationships to the federal government.”
