Jeffrey Ives weighed in on treatments that are meant to focus on the mind-body connection. "Many of these approaches can be defined as postural re-education, with an emphasis on body awareness and understanding your own movement patterns," says Ives. "You make changes that are both psychological and physical." But "body awareness" isn't always a good thing. Becoming hyper-aware of every nuance, process and force acting on the body can lead to somatic preoccupation and symptom magnification, he cautions.
