Inside Bay Area — “Alameda woman gets inside look at Africa's 'shocking' health care crisis”

Maddie Kennedy, Ithaca College student

Ithaca College junior Maddie Kennedy was among a group of IC students who visited the Republic of Malawi this summer as part of a health care and culture course.  She told her hometown newspaper about the purpose behind the trip and what she learned there.  The students assisted at health clinics and gave the local people supplies such as mattresses and toys.  "I wish that I could say that my initial interest in going on the trip was because I was keenly interested in learning more about the health crisis that is facing one of the poorest nations in the world," Kennedy said. "But, truthfully, I went on a whim because going to Africa offered the opportunity to travel."
That whim turned out to be one of the most profound experiences of her life, she said.
