Ithaca, NY--The Society of Professional Journalists has awarded Ithaca College's student newspaper, the "Ithacan," a Mark of Excellence Award for the best all-around weekly student newspaper in the country for the 1999-2000 academic year. The award was presented October 28 at the SPJ national convention in Columbus, Ohio. The "Ithacan" won top honors based on the criteria of accuracy and completeness, effectiveness, writing style, and enterprise and ingenuity.
"The Mark of Excellence Awards are among the most prestigious that college journalism students can win," says David E. Carlson, SPJ vice president for campus chapter affairs. "Each of the winners was culled from among hundreds of entries nationwide, and each of these students should be very, very proud of a job well done." The issues that won the award were published in the fall of 1999, when the top two spots on the masthead belonged to Robert B. Bluey '01, then editor in chief, and Melissa Bloomrose '00, who served as managing editor. "Teamwork, dedication, and excellent advising were the qualities responsible for the paper's success," Bluey says. "By working together as a team and always giving it their all, the students produced a top-notch newspaper and had fun doing it. Without their energy and our adviser's enthusiasm, the paper wouldn't be where it is today." "While the 'Ithacan' has a long tradition of winning awards, this is the most prestigious honor a student newspaper can win," adds J. Michael Serino, manager of student publications. "The dedication, commitment, and long hours of hard work by Rob, Melissa, and last years 'Ithacan' staff have brought the paper to a new level of excellence, and they--and the campus community at large--should be very proud of that achievement." The "Ithacan" began publishing in 1942. Open to all interested students regardless of major, the "Ithacan" serves as a communication vehicle for the College community and trains students in all aspects of publishing, including reporting, advertising, design, and photography. The "Ithacan" is on-line at www.ithaca.edu/ithacan. In addition to the best weekly newspaper category, SPJ judged the nation's student media in 35 other categories. Honors for the best daily newspaper went to the University of Texas at Austin. Brigham Young University had the best online newspaper. SPJ, with 14,000 members, is the nation's largest and most broad-based professional journalism organization.
