Ithaca, NY--Students who are interested in healthcare careers and who will be entering grades 10 and 11 this fall are invited to participate in HealthQuest, a residential summer camp to be held at Ithaca College from July 18 to 22. HealthQuest will give young people the chance to explore career opportunities in allied health care while getting a taste of life on a college campus.
“Students attending the camp at Ithaca College will learn about professions in health care other than doctor, dentist, or nurse,” says Steven Siconolfi, dean of the School of Health Sciences and Human Performance. “Through interactive learning experiences with practicing professionals and college instructors, young people will be exposed to career possibilities in allied health fields that include occupational and physical therapy, speech-language pathology and audiology, athletic training, therapeutic recreation, and exercise science. Professions such as these are the silent majority in health care and provide the infrastructure for the highest quality of health care in the world.” HealthQuest is an outgrowth of a similar program begun last year called MedQuest, an initiative of a partnership forged between the Central New York Area Health Education Center (CNYAHEC) and SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse. That program proved so popular--drawing 70 applicants for 20 camp slots--that CNYAHEC teamed up with the Ithaca College School of Health Sciences and Human Performance to establish a camp for those interested in allied health professions. The registration fee for HealthQuest is $240 per student. The fee includes all meals, dormitory housing, and activities for the duration of camp. Interested students must submit an application form no later than May 29. A committee will make selections based on completed applications. Application forms, along with more information, are available at www.cnyahec.org or by calling CNYAHEC at (607) 756-1090. Located in Cortland, CNYAHEC is not-for-profit organization whose mission is to promote improvements in the supply, training, and development of health care professionals in a 14-county area that includes Tompkins County. HealthQuest and MedQuest are also being sponsored by Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, which is part of a family of companies that finances and delivers healthcare services across upstate New York. Excellus BlueCross BlueShield also sponsors and supports community-based programs and is committed to developing our health care workforce to meet current and future demands.
