His free public presentation will be held at 8 p.m. in Textor 102. As a well-informed realist, Halevi will offer some surprising and nuanced views on Israel, the Palestinians and life in the Middle East. Born and raised in New York, he moved to Israel in 1982. He is currently a senior fellow at the Shalem Center, a center-right think tank in Jerusalem. Active in many Middle East reconciliation efforts, he chairs Open House, an Arab-Jewish educational project located in the mixed Arab and Jewish working-class town of Ramle, and he was a founder of the now-defunct Israeli-Palestinian Media Forum, which brought together journalists from both communities. Halevi is a contributing editor and Israel correspondent for the “New Republic” and has published regularly on the op-ed pages of major U.S. newspapers. He is the author of two highly acclaimed books, “Memoirs of a Jewish Extremist: An American Story” and “At the Entrance to the Garden of Eden: A Jew’s Search for God with Christians and Muslims in the Holy Land.” The 1983 documentary film “Kaddish” — which focuses on Halevi’s relationship with his father, a Holocaust survivor — was named by the “Village Voice” as one of the 10 best films of the year. Halevi’s talk is sponsored by Hillel as well as a number of other campus departments. For more information, contact Michael Faber at faber@ithaca.edu.
