ITHACA, NY — Ithaca College’s James J. Whalen Center for Music will be the venue for the 18th annual New Directions Cello Festival, a three-day series of workshops and performances running from Friday to Sunday, June 8 to 10. In addition to instructional sessions and private performances, the festival will offer three public concerts:

- Saturday Night Concert, June 9, 7:30–10:30 p.m., featuring guest cellists Ashia Grzesik; Dave Eggar and the Deoro Trio; and Kelly Ellis and Ancient Device
- Sunday Big Band Concert, June 10, 1:30-3 p.m., featuring many of the festival’s guest cellists
The public concerts will take place in the Hockett Family Recital Hall in the Whalen Center.
Tickets will be available at the door for the Friday and Saturday performances. Prices for each performance are: $20 for adults; $12 for students and seniors; $6 for children under 12.
The Sunday concert is free.
“The goals of the festival are to encourage interaction among nonclassical cellists and promote awareness among all cellists and the musically oriented public about the contributions that cellists are making in many styles of contemporary music,” said festival director Chris White. “This encompasses those musical styles that are not commonly taught to cellists at music schools, such as jazz, blues, rock, folk, experimental, ethnic and especially techniques involving improvisation.”
