Ithaca College Film Series to Show Documentary on 'Homohop'

ITHACA, NY — A documentary about the queer hip-hop scene — also known as “homohop” — will be shown as part of the Out of the Closet and Onto the Screen film series at Ithaca College. Free and open to the public, the screening of “Pic Up the Mic” will take place on Thursday, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m. in Textor 103.

Featuring searing public performances and raw, revealing interviews with the community’s most significant players, “Pic Up the Mic” captures an unapologetic underground music movement just as it explodes into the mainstream, defying one of the music industry’s most homophobic genres in the process. The film reveals these artists and producers as they attempt to express their lives through hip-hop music, a medium from which they’ve often felt alienated because of its widespread misogyny and anti-gay rhetoric.

Out of the Closet and Onto the Screen is sponsored by the Ithaca College Center for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Education, Outreach, and Services. The theme of this year’s series is “Music: From A Cappella to Queercore.” For more information, visit www.ithaca.edu/lgbt.
