Inaugural Investment Competition at Ithaca College Enables Real-Time Trading Education

ITHACA, NY — Twenty-six teams from 14 high schools in the Northeast participated in the inaugural Ithaca College High School Investment Competition that brought real-world investment tactics into high school classrooms. Hosted by the School of Business, the competition offered students the opportunity to learn the basic principles of the stock market and fundamentals of real-time trading.

Finishing as the top team, for having the best portfolio price appreciation of 13.07%, was FLCS Panthers from Finger Lakes Christian School in Seneca, N.Y. The team and school were awarded a $5,000 cash prize.

Taking second place and a $3,000 prize was Roxbury 8A from Roxbury High School in Succasunna, N.J., while the $2,000 prize for third place was awarded to M.M.J. from Irondequoit High School in Rochester, N.Y.

Teams consisted of three to six students, with each receiving $500,000 in virtual U.S. dollars to build a portfolio consisting of 5 to 20 stocks. After their initial investment, teams had a series of five check-points where they could reallocate their funds.

During the competition, which ran from November 1 to March 28, teams and their faculty advisors visited the School of Business for live portfolio performance rankings. While there, they had the opportunity to see the school’s Trading Room in action and meet with finance faculty members and the Core Trading Consultants, a student group that actively manages a mutual fund.

 “The High School Investment Competition highlighted the strong interest high school students have in the investing world,” said Mary Ellen Zuckerman, dean of the School of Business. “It  allowed these students to have the experience of competing in this world, with advice from college students here at Ithaca who are studying investing. With real cash prizes on the line, teams were incentivized to do their best, and to see the best of what Ithaca College has to offer in learning about investing.”
