Ragtime Pianist Terry Waldo to Give Free Concert at Ithaca College
ITHACA, NY — Terry Waldo — hailed by the “New York Times” as a “ragtime pianist nonpareil and eminent scholar of the form” — will visit Ithaca College in September for a three-day teaching residency as well as a public performance. Beginning at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 14, the concert will take place in the Hoerner Theatre in Dillingham Center. There will be no charge for Waldo’s performance and seating will be by general admission.
A protégé of jazz great Eubie Blake, Waldo is known not only for his virtuosic interpretation of ragtime and early jazz, but also for his storytelling and wit. He has performed worldwide in jazz’s best-known venues including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall and Michael’s Pub.
A reviewer in the “San Francisco Examiner” wrote, “Waldo’s New York Centennial Ragtime Celebration ranks among the best and most entertaining such presentations in my 25 years of Big Apple festival attendance (JVC festival). The ragtime event featured Terry Waldo as bandleader, pianist and narrator/host. He is brilliant and imaginative as a musician and a droll, witty raconteur.”
Following the performance, Waldo will be signing copies of his recently reissued book, “This Is Ragtime,” with a forward by Eubie Blake and an introduction by Wynton Marsalis. Also available for purchase will be Waldo’s numerous CDs and DVDs.
Waldo’s visit is made possible by the Linden Center for Creativity and Aging, the Ithaca College Gerontology Institute, the Offices of the President and Provost, the Division of Student Affairs and Campus Life, the School of Humanities and Sciences Educational Grant Initiative, and the Special Events Committee in the School of Music.
