Sophomore Tariq Meyers Elected Student Trustee at Ithaca College

ITHACA, NY — At its May meeting, the Ithaca College Board of Trustees elected sophomore politics major Tariq Meyers to a two-year term as student trustee.

A Martin Luther King Jr. Scholar at the college, Meyers has been involved with a number of institutional programs and student organizations. He has served as an Orientation Leader, Student Ambassador for the Office of Admission, Senator with the Student Government Association, Director of Internal Affairs for the African-Latino Society and Political Chairperson of Brothers for Brothers. He has also worked as an assistant in the Office of Residential Life & Judicial Affairs and Office of Admission.

In 2011, Meyers was one of 40 college students from across the country selected to take part in a reenactment of the famous Freedom Rides in conjunction with a PBS film commemorating the 50th anniversary of the historic episode in the Civil Rights Movement. He traveled by bus for 10 days from Washington, D.C., to New Orleans, as part of an effort to launch a national conversation about the role of civic engagement in today’s democracy.

A 2010 graduate of Boston College High School, Meyers is from Dorchester, Massachusetts. He was recognized with the Princeton University Prize in Race Relations for his research related to the social consciousness of youth in Boston, the creation and implementation of the first city-wide “Social Justice Summit,” and for research related to the coexistence of those involved in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
