Fieldwork
& Internships in Sport Management & Media
General Information for Undergraduate
Students
The Ithaca College Sport
Management and Media program provides undergraduate students with a wide
range of academic and practical experiences relevant to a career in the
sports industry. If you are a graduate student, please click
here for information about internships at the graduate level.
In addition to coursework, students are required to pursue both fieldwork and internship opportunities. A Fieldwork/Internship Handbook is available in the departmental office in Hill 12. Students should work directly with their assigned academic advisor in the department to develop their strategic career plan.
Students who do not know who their academic advisor is should contact the department office immediately.
Eligibility
- The student desiring an internship must give notice
in writing, on the appropriate form, of that fact to their faculty advisor
PRIOR to registration for the semester in which the internship/fieldwork
is desired.
- Notwithstanding all of the foregoing, the Department
retains the absolute discretion to assess a student's eligibility for
an internship.
Forms & Paperwork
- All students are required to complete the appropriate
petition form - either for an internship
or fieldwork. All information
should be typed into the form prior to printing. You
will need to consult with your academic advisor before completing the
form.
- All forms must be submitted to Cindy Turo in the departmental
office (12 Hill).
- No retroactive credit will be granted. If you want
credit for your field experience, you must complete the appropriate
form and submit it for signature before the start date listed.
- Forms are also available here.
Goals
- To provide interested students with off-campus opportunities in their area of concentration.
- To allow student the opportunity to put into practice theories learned in the classroom and obtain practical experiences in their field of interest.
General Guidelines
- The Department is committed to locating an internship placement for any student who is interested and eligible. However, there is no assurance or obligation to provide an internship placement with a specific kind of organization, certain geographical location, or with financial compensation.
- Each student will be assigned a faculty advisor who will be responsible for student advising, placement and development of internship opportunities.
- When the Department receives notice of an internship opportunity, any eligible student may apply for that internship.
- Students are requested to inform their advisor of the nature of direct contacts they have made with internship organizations.
- A student to whom an offer has been made cannot make any additional applications until the student has made a decision on the outstanding offer.
- As a general rule, students who are offered an internship
position have one week to make a decision regarding acceptance, unless
the organization has extended a longer time period.
- Fieldwork or Internship credit can not be awarded for work experiences finishes prior to registering for the course.
