British Law and Advisories for Student Conduct

It should be noted that in addition to the rules and regulations defined in the Ithaca College London Center Student Conduct Code which will be distributed at the pre-departure orientation session, participants in the London Center program are expected to adhere to the laws of the United Kingdom or any other countries in which they may be travelling. While it is not exhaustive, the following list is an outline of important laws and advisories, which all London Center students should understand and respect. It is also important to understand that while overseas, you are in effect an ambassador of the United States and Ithaca College (or other college) and should behave accordingly.

BRITISH LAW:

  • The possession, use, purchase, distribution or sale of illegal drugs (including marijuana) is illegal. The US Embassy cannot assist US citizens who violate these laws while in the United Kingdom.

  • Possession or use of mace, pepper spray, knives (including pocket knives and switchblades), firearms or other dangerous weapons are also against the law.

ADVISORIES:

  • Avoid behavior that is disruptive, excessively noisy or indecent wherever you go, and try not to attract attention. Remember that in many parts of the world, Americans have a reputation for being loud and obnoxious.

  • Be respectful of your neighbors and their rights to privacy and quiet.

  • Remember that YOU are the foreigner. Expectations and standards of behavior, such as political correctness, that regulate life in the USA are not always the same in other countries.

  • Heed all warnings (safety or otherwise) given by local authorities.

  • Obey all signs and postings. "Stay off the Grass," "No Trespassing," and other posted rules and regulations should be taken seriously.

  • Avoid political demonstrations.

  • Accept responsibility for your own behavior.

  • Dress discreetly. Wearing tight or short clothing or exposing cleavage is likely to elicit an unwanted response. Consider your intentions and the message you want to send when selecting garments and dressing.

  • The legal drinking age in London and most of Europe is 18. If you choose to consume alcoholic beverages, remember that drinking to excess makes you more vulnerable to crime. Whenever you go out at night, be aware of your surroundings, carry only what you need, know how to get home, and avoid walking alone.

  • Secure the address and telephone number of the nearest embassy or consulate both in London and the countries to which you plan to travel.

  • Use good manners; Remove baseball caps when you are inside.

  • Wait patiently in lines until it is your turn.

  • Take time to learn about current events in the USA. Europeans tend to be well versed in American politics, and they often engage in discussions on the role of the U.S. in world events. As a result of some conversations, you may feel that you have been held "responsible" for U.S. policy or actions. It is helpful to understand current events so that you can express and defend your position on the issues.
