FOR PARENTS

By clicking on the navigations bars above and to the right you should get a pretty good idea of what types of programs are available to Ithaca College students.

At Ithaca College, we make a distinction between IC programs (which include the Ithaca College London Center and all exchange programs), affiliated programs, non-affiliated programs and short term programs. The major difference between these programs is how a student's financial aid will be impacted, whether or not they will have to take a leave of absence and how their grades transfer.

For IC, exchange and affiliated programs: Students will be billed regular IC tuition, regardless of the price of the program, and state, federal and institutional financial aid may be applied to the program cost, though actual aid amounts will be re-evaluated based upon actual program expenses. Students will be billed an additional cost of room and board and must, of course, pay for their flights. All courses and grades are guaranteed to transfer and will appear on the student's IC transcript. Applications are due the semester before a student plans to be abroad.

For non-affiliated programs: If a student is interested in participating on a program other than an IC, exchange, or affiliate program, they may do so by taking a leave of absence from the College. In doing so, they will lose the ability to apply state or institutional aid that they may be receiving. Federal aid will, in most instances, still apply. There will be an administrative fee charged in order to handle the transfering of credits and an additional deposit in order to hold the student's place upon return to IC. In addition, IC does not guarantee transfer of credit from non-affiliate programs, though in most cases courses will transfer. While the student will receive credit, his/her grades will not appear on his/her IC transcript nor be counted toward their cumulative GPA. Most applications are due the semester before a student plans to be abroad, although some programs may require applications to be submitted earlier.

For short term programs: Ithaca College faculty regularly develop short term, overseas programs in conjunction with courses they are teaching in order to give students a first-hand account of the materials covered in class. These courses vary from year to year depending on faculty interest, though some courses have been traveling regularly for several years. Usually, short term programs take place over the winter break or during the summer, from 2-6 weeks. Costs of these programs vary depending on location and the number of credits being offered. Unfortunately, financial aid rarely applies to short term programs as they tend to fall outside of the academic semester.
