Music Immersion Program: Academic Planning

So the courses look intriguing and you are beginning to picture yourself studying in New York. Good! Now you have to begin planning your academics to make sure that you are able to study in NYC and also complete your studies on-time. Remember, studying in NYC requires advanced planning with your advisor.

Applicable information for all School of Music students

-Ensemble will be waived and substituted by the 1 credit mini-course. 
(NYC Music Special Topics Mini-course MUMC 22100 or SRT Mini-Course MUMC 41400)
-Repertoire class will be waived and substituted by Professional Career Mentoring PFMJ 19800, NLA
-Students studying in NYC during their junior year fall would postpone their music theory MUTH 32100 - Form and Analysis until their senior year. MUTH 32200 - Analysis of Music since 1900 can still be taken in the junior spring, since MUTH 32100 is not a pre-requisite for MUTH 32200. Both courses are also offered in the summer, subject to enrollment.
-Required recitals cannot be completed in NYC
-Juniors have the option of completing their Recital Attendance requirement in NYC or postponing it until their senior year in the fall.

 

Additional information by degree program

Bachelor of Music in Performance, Piano
-Pianists studying in NYC during their junior year would complete Survey of Piano Literature during their senior year. Seniors who wish to study in NYC would need to complete Survey of Piano Literature during their junior year. 

-Chamber Music should be taken during sophomore year in order to study in NYC.
-Recital cannot be completed in NYC.

Bachelor of Music in Performance, Instrumental 
-Chamber Music should be taken during sophomore year in order to study in NYC.
-Recital cannot be completed in NYC.

Bachelor of Music in Music Education, Guitar
-Woodwind class and Laboratory Band should be completed before senior year.
- Students normally would complete 9 credits of liberal arts their senior year. This can be done at ICNYC (raising the credit hours to 17.5). It is recommended that an additional 3 credit liberal arts course be completed earlier in the student’s career.
-Student teaching must be completed during the spring semester.

Bachelor of Music in Music Education, Vocal
- Students normally would complete 12 credits of liberal arts their senior year. Only 9 credits of liberal arts can be completed at ICNYC (raising the total credit hours to 17.5). It is recommended that 6 credits of liberal arts is completed earlier in the student’s career leaving the remaining 6 credits to be completed in ICNYC. 
-Student teaching must be completed during the spring semester.

Bachelor of Music in Music Education, Winds and Percussion
- Students normally would complete 9 credits of liberal arts their fall semester senior year. This can be done at ICNYC (raising the credit hours to 17.5). It is recommended that an additional 3 credit liberal arts course be completed earlier in the student’s career.
-Student teaching must be completed during the spring semester.

Bachelor of Music in Music Education, Strings
-Student teaching must be completed during the spring semester.

Bachelor of Music in Music Education, Piano and Organ
-Choral Ensemble (1 credit) must be completed before senior year.
-Brass Class, Percussion Class, and Lab Band will need to be completed during another semester.
-Student teaching must be completed during the spring semester.

Bachelor of Music in Performance and Music Education, Guitar
-Students need to ensure they take Percussion Class and Woodwind Class during another semester.
- Students normally would complete 9 credits of liberal arts both their fall semester senior year and fifth year. This can be done at ICNYC (raising the credit hours to 17.5). It is recommended that an additional 3 credit liberal arts course be completed earlier in the student’s career.
- Student teaching and recital cannot be completed in NYC.

Bachelor of Music in Performance and Music Education, Vocal
-Students need to ensure they take Brass Class during another semester.
- Student teaching and recital cannot be completed in NYC.
- Students normally would complete 9 credits of liberal arts their fall semester senior year. This can be done at ICNYC (raising the credit hours to 17.5). It is recommended that an additional 3 credit liberal arts course be completed earlier in the student’s career or during their fifth year.

Bachelor of Music in Performance and Music Education, Winds and Percussion

- Student teaching and recital cannot be completed in NYC.
-Chamber Music should be taken during sophomore year in order to study in NYC.

Bachelor of Music in Performance and Music Education, Piano and Organ
-Woodwind Class, Percussion Class, and Lab Band will need to be completed during another semester.
- Student teaching and recital cannot be completed in NYC.
-Chamber Music should be taken during junior year in order to study in NYC.

Bachelor of Music in Composition
-Private Piano and Orchestration will be completed during senior year.

Bachelor of Arts in Music
- Students normally would complete 9 credits of liberal arts their fall semester junior year. This can be done at ICNYC (raising the credit hours to 17.5). It is recommended that an additional 3 credit liberal arts course be completed earlier in the student’s career or during their senior year.
-Music History Elective must be completed during another semester.

Bachelor or Music in Combination with an Outside Field
- Students normally would complete 9 credits of liberal arts their fall semesters junior and senior year. This can be done at ICNYC (raising the credit hours to 17.5). It is recommended that an additional 3 credit liberal arts course be completed during another semester.

Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies
-Students wishing to study in NYC their junior year should ensure they take the following courses at these times:
Jazz Theory I&II (freshman spring), Jazz Arranging I (sophomore fall), Jazz Arranging II and Jazz Standards & Lit I (sophomore spring), and Jazz Standards & Lit II (senior fall), and Jazz Standards and Lit III (senior spring).
-Students wishing to study in NYC their senior year should ensure they take the following courses at these times: Jazz Theory I&II (freshman spring), Jazz Arranging I (sophomore fall), Jazz Arranging II and Jazz Standards & Lit I (sophomore spring), Jazz Standards & Lit II (junior fall), Jazz Standards and Lit III (junior or senior spring).
