Student Profile: Shannon Archer '10
There are many things that excite Shannon Archer '10 about interning with NBC for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, but there's only one thing that worries her.
"It’s going to be my first plane ride," she confesses.
Still, Shannon knows the experience will be worth it. "I knew I wanted to intern with NBC for the Beijing Olympics ever since I heard Dean Dianne Lynch talk about the program at an open house I attended during my senior year of high school," says Shannon.
This July, she'll brave that jet ride in the hopes of gaining valuable hands-on experience as well learning more about the field of sports marketing. "This internship combines my two passions: communications and sports."
As an athlete herself on Ithaca College's women's varsity swimming team, Shannon's excited to see American favorites Michael Phelps, Aaron Peirsol, and Natalie Coughlin compete for the gold. But that’s not the only thing she's looking forward to on this Olympic adventure.
"I'm excited to travel, to meet new people, and have fun. I think what I am most excited for, though, is to see the U.S. swim team compete at the new water cube!"
Shannon, a double major in integrated marketing communications and sport studies, is also involved with the American Advertising Federation, Colleges Against Cancer, IC After Dark, the Catholic campus ministry, and was recently named a rising-junior Park Scholar. She hasn't entirely settled on a career choice, but admits to having "lots of dream jobs" in mind for after graduation. "I would love to do marketing for ESPN or NBC Sports, or do creative advertising for Nike or Speedo."
