The African-Latino Society
EST. 1969
A Brief History
The African-Latino Society / La Sociedad Africana-Latina (ALS) was formed in 1969 by a group of African American and Latino students at Ithaca College. Originally named the Afro-Latin Society, these students felt the need to create an organization where other African Americans and Latinos would feel welcomed. Today ALS is one of the largest organizations on the Ithaca College campus that creates a home for all students of color. ALS is also the only student run organization with its own room and office, which is located in the West Tower Lobby. The ALS room serves as a place to study, hold various meetings and programs, or just to relax for all students of the Ithaca College community.
The Logo
The logo of the African-Latino Society is a combination of Africa and Latin America to symbolize the joining together of the two people. Our organizationˆ¢s colors are black and silver.
ALS Umbrella Organizations
As one of the oldest student run organizations at Ithaca College, ALS has created a number of umbrella or sister organizations in which we have collaborated with on several occations. These organizations include KUUMBA Repertory Theater, Amani Gospel Singers,Asian Culture Club (ACC), and the Caribbean Students Association (CSA)
Membership in ALS is open to all students of the Ithaca College community. Our meetings are held bi-weekly on Wednesday nights at 7pm in the ALS room located in the West Tower Lobby.
