Placement Exams

Language PlacementLanguage Placement
All new and transfer students who have studied another language should take a relevant language placement exam.

All students who have studied another language prior to coming to Ithaca College should take a language placement exam, regardless of whether or not they intend to continue with that language at Ithaca College. These exams help determine the appropriate language placement based on your aptitude and your academic goals.

Language tests may also be required to demonstrate proficiency in some majors; in this case, the test must be taken on campus in the fall semester by arrangement with the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures.

Exams Available Online:
Online placement exams are available for students of German, Spanish, and French via your myIthaca portal. Log on to your myIthaca account and click on the “Exams” tab at the top of the page. Access to online language placement testing begins on the last week in March.

Exams Available by Appointment:
Students who need to take a placement exam in Chinese, Arabic, Latin, Hebrew, or Italian will need to contact Tina Bennett in the Department of Modern Languages and Literature at 607-274-3106 to schedule an appointment during your summer orientation program.

New Students: The best time to take your placement exam is during orientation check-in, between 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. on Monday or Wednesday; however, the department will work with you to establish the best appointment time for your needs.

Transfer Students:
For transfer students who have already taken college-level language courses and want to continue in that language at Ithaca College, placement is determined by the most recent language course completed with a grade of C- or better.
