Topics

Calculator A graphing calculator is required in this course. The calculator is used in the labs and I will use a calculator to demonstrate many of the ideas we study. You are free to use your calculator on homework, quizzes, and exams. I use, and recommend, the TI-83Plus graphing calculator. The TI84 calculator is also fine.
Attendance
I expect everyone to come to every class. If you miss more than 5 lectures (excluding religious holidays and excused absences) during the semester, you may fail the class. If you miss a class for any reason, you are responsible for the material you have missed. You must take your quizzes, midterms, and final on time.
Homework
Daily Exercises from the book:
I will ask you to read a section or two in the text and try some exercises. I will answer your questions on these exercises after completing the sections, if time permits. It is important to do all the exercises, since most of the questions in quizzes and exams may be identical or similar to homework problems.
Homework to be handed in:
In addition to the daily homework, you will be given a set of problems to be handed in Fridays.
Quiz
You will be given a quiz on Fridays in class. Quiz questions will be similar to exercises assigned from the textbook. So studying these exercises and the section(s) will be sufficient to prepare yourself for quizzes.
Project

These are mainly large homework to be done in groups. Additional information will be provided before each assignment.

Classmates I encourage you to know your classmates; they are a vital resource in learning mathematics. Working in groups on projects, homework, and mathematics in general, is a fantastic way to learn mathematics. When working in groups, each participant needs to give a significant contribution, be that answering questions, recording ideas, or asking thoughtful questions. When work is to be handed in, plagiarism of any kind will result in a grade of zero on that assignement. Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to, copying from each other, internet sources, and books.
Support When you run into difficulties in this class, you should first seek out my help. I will do my best to help you overcome any difficulties with the material or with anxiety you might have about the course. Please do not wait until you feel completely overwhelmed before seeking my help.
The Math Department also provides free tutoring; information may be found here.
Prelims

Three tests will be given during the semester. Tests are not cumulative. You will be given problem set to study and a review session will be arranged before every test including the final exam.

Prelim 1: Tuesday, October 6
Prelim 2: Tuesday, November 3
Prelim 3: Tuesday, December 8

Final Final is a cumulative exam. You must take your final exam on time. Date, room, and time will be announced by mid-semester
