Ithaca College Named to Community Service Honor Roll
ITHACA, NY — The Corporation for National and Community Service has recognized Ithaca College with a place on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. Launched in 2006, the honor roll is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service learning and civic engagement.
Honorees are chosen based on a series of selection factors including scope and innovation of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses. Nearly 4,200 Ithaca College students contributed an impressive 45,000 hours of community service during the 2010–11 academic year.
Among numerous formal initiatives, Ithaca College provides community service opportunities through Community Plunge; Alternative Spring Break; the MLK Scholar, Park Scholar and Leadership Scholar programs; the IC-Longview Partnership; Service Saturdays Program; Big Brothers-Big Sisters; United Way Philanthropy Corps; and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Students informally contribute to many other local, national and global service efforts.
The college’s commitment to service is expressed clearly in the institution’s mission statement, which states that, “All members of the college community are encouraged to achieve excellence in their chosen fields and to share the responsibilities of citizenship and service in the global community.”
As part of IC 20/20 — the college’s strategic vision — the Office of Civic Engagement was recently created to work closely with the Office of Student Engagement and Multicultural Affairs in coordinating service learning and volunteer community service by students and campus organizations.
