What is the Park Scholar Program?

The Park Scholar Program is more than a scholarship program; it creates a dynamic learning community and develops future communications leaders who engage critically, act globally, and perform ethically. Through a mixture of academic and service programming, scholars are challenged to take action and give back to their communities, and to use the power of mass communication to make a positive impact on the world.

What is the Park Foundation?

Through the generosity of the Park Foundation , Ithaca College’s Roy H. Park School of Communications has welcomed outstanding high school seniors as Park Scholars since 1996. Grants from the Park Foundation also provide funding for endowed professorships, a distinguished visitor series, and capital equipment for the Park School.

What are the conditions for the renewal of the Park Scholarship?

Once at Ithaca College, Park Scholars are expected to:

      • maintain a 3.5 GPA and full-time enrollment in the Park School

      • engage in community service

      • participate in Park scholar activities

      • be a model citizen and maintain good judicial standing.

Do the Park Scholars have meetings?

Park Scholars meet as a group twice a semester, and they also gather for various academic and service programs. Please check out our calendar for more information on these events.

Is there Park Scholar housing?

First-year scholars are expected to live with and participate in the HOME program, a residential learning committee that explores multicultural issues.

Do Park Scholars work on projects with faculty?

Each semester, Park Scholars have the opportunity to apply for the Faculty Mentoring Program. In this program, scholars work side by side with faculty members in their field to conduct research and/or create various forms of media. For past projects, scholars have explored sound-image relations, analyzed representations of the war on drugs in cinema, and investigated the relationship between journalism and fantasy sports.

Can Park Scholars receive additional funding for activities?

Park Scholars may apply through the program for small grants to support various service or academic endeavors. Some of the projects funded by these grants have included participation in Alternative Spring Break and Habitat for Humanity and attendance at academic conferences such as the National College Media Convention and the National Student Leadership Conference.
