2.16 Driving College Vehicles
2.16.1 Obtaining Permission to Drive College Vehicles
All Ithaca College community members who intend on driving College-owned, -leased or -rented vehicles must be 21 years of age and have their driving record reviewed. Faculty and staff must have their driving record checked every two academic years; students must have their driving record reviewed annually. Students are allowed to operate vehicles in the United States only.
Students are also required to attend a free two-hour driver safety class and pass a written test. Classes are scheduled on various dates throughout the academic year.
Individuals must complete a Driver Information form, which takes approximately 14 business days to process, prior to driving a College owned or rented vehicle. Otherwise, individuals will not be allowed to drive. Driver records that show unacceptable risk, as determined by the College's insurance carrier, will not be permitted to drive any College vehicles. Criteria for revoking College driving privileges are as follows:
- 8 points against a driver's license during the past two years; or
- 2 or more moving violations during the past two years; or
- suspended or revoked driver's license; or
- DUI (driving under the influence) or DWI (driving while intoxicated) violation during the past two years.
Individuals will be notified by the Office of Risk Management only if their records do not meet the required standards.
2.16.2 Traveling with Individuals other than Ithaca College Personnel
As a general principle, only Ithaca College faculty, staff and students should occupy College-owned or rented vehicles. However, there may be special circumstances when a spouse, member of another college or university community, or other individuals will join the College representative to a common business purpose destination. These situations should be the exception, not the norm, and when they do occur, the Office of Risk Management should be informed of them in advance. Only Ithaca College faculty, staff and students who have been approved to drive College vehicles are authorized to operate College-owned or rented vehicles.
