New York State Senate Undergraduate Session Assistant Program
The program is intended to provide talented undergraduate students with first-hand experience of New York State government at the legislative level, to promote the expectations of faculty and students and to introduce real experience to their academic endeavors. The Senate welcomes majors in all accredited disciplines. Skill and ability, initiative, eagerness to learn, discretion, maturity and flexibility are essential for success. Placement in offices of individual senators allows the opportunity to observe, participate in, and acquire experience with state government procedures.
The spring semester program is intended for college juniors and seniors; but exceptional sophomores may be selected. Selection is for up to 61 certifiably capable students, including a $3,000 stipend to offset costs of moving to and living in Albany. Arrangement of housing in Albany is the responsibility of the individual student enrollee. Combined participation in the program academic component and legislative placement is for a minimum of 35 hours per week.
