The Aurora Quintet

Aurora QuintetThe Aurora Quintet was formed in 1987 by faculty members of the Ithaca College Chamber Music Institute. David Holland was at that time artistic director of the institute and, with Sandy Reuning, brought together violinists John Lindsey and Marla Rathbun, violist George Myers, cellist Crispin Campbell, and himself to create the ensemble. They immediately felt a mutual bond in their love of the art form and in their playing compatibility.

Five-part writing allows a freedom of line to individual voices and a richness of texture unavailable in trio or quartet literature. The Aurora Quintet has enjoyed the opportunity to explore this great music and is grate-ful to Ithaca Talent Education for providing the starting point for this endeavor.

The quintet continues to perform at the Manitou Music Festival in Glen Arbor, Michigan, every summer. All the members of the group have active careers with other musical groups and institutions, but the bonds of friendship and artistic discovery keep them connected in a vital way. Their return to the Ithaca College Chamber Music Institute is perhaps the best tribute to its success as we celebrate the institute's 25th year.
