Institute Faculty
Belinda Reuning Burge, Cincinnati, Ohio, violist
with the Dayton Philharmonic and the Amaranth String Quartet. She is a
former member of the Louisville Orchestra and, as an active chamber musician,
performed with the Griller, Vanadium, and Montani string quartets. She
has also participated in the Portland Chamber Music Festival. Burge is
a native of Ithaca, N.Y., and received her bachelor of music in applied
viola from the Curtis Institute of Music. She has a master's degree in
music performance and literature from the Eastman School of Music. She
has appeared as soloist with the Curtis Institute of Music orchestra,
was principal viola of the West Virginia Symphony, and was assistant principal
viola of the Dayton Philharmonic. She has previously held positions at
the Meadowmount School of Music (1988) and Point Counterpoint (1992).
She has performed at the Evian Music Festival (France), Lancaster (Pa.)
Music Festival, Bethlehem (Pa.) Music Festival, Bethlehem (Pa.) Bach Festival,
Northwood Orchestra Festival of the Lakes (Mich.), and Music from Bear
Valley (Calif.). She has studied viola with Martha Katz, Joseph de Pasquale,
and David Holland.
David
Eby, Portland, Ore., chairman of string studies at Marylhurst
University. Eby performs with the Portland Opera Orchestra, and is the
cellist for Pink Martini, a Latin/jazz/classical band that has performed
at the Cannes Film Festival and with the Oregon Symphony. Eby studied
with Janos Starker, Paul Katz, Irene Sharp, and Tsyoshi Tsutsumi, at the
Eastman School of Music and Indiana University. He was a member of the
Vanadium String Quartet with Belinda Reuning Burge, and has taught and
coached at Meadowmount School of Music, Point Counterpoint, and the Louisville
Suzuki Institute. As principal cellist of the Evansville Philharmonic
in Indiana, he was a founding member of the Evansville String Quartet,
and toured nationally with the musical storytelling troupe, Tales &
Scales. He has soloed with the Pittsburgh Symphony and the Marylhurst
Symphony. Eby's composition, "Celtic Passage," has been published
by Latham Music. His current projects include incorporating the teachings
of yoga into classical music performance and teaching.
John Lindsey, Potsdam, N.Y., member of the violin
faculty at the Crane School of Music; member of the Aurora Quintet; concertmaster
of the Orchestra of Northern New York and the Hanover (N.H.) Chamber Orchestra;
member of the Ruggieri Chamber Soloists. Lindsey received the 1993 President's
Award for Excellence in Teaching and was named teacher of the year at
Potsdam College. Previously, he was chairman of strings at Baylor University
and the University of Kentucky; concertmaster of the Dallas Chamber Players
and the Lexington Philharmonic and Warren Chamber Orchestras; member of
the Concord Trio, the Lexington String Quartet, and the Quartetto da Camera.
In 1989, Lindsey was chosen as the Allegro Artist in Residence for the
city of Dayton, Ohio. In the summer, he has been on the faculties of the
Governor's School of North Carolina, the National Music Camp and Chamber
Music Conference in Interlochen, Mich., and the Stage de Musique in Marcillat-en-Combraille,
France.
George Myers, Trumansburg, N.Y., director of
orchestras at Ithaca High School. Myers was on the faculty at Hamilton
College from 1980 to 1996, where he taught viola, violin, and chamber
music. He is a member of the Aurora Quintet and a frequent performer with
the Catskill Chamber Players. Myers is a graduate of Hunter College and
received his master's degree in performance from the State University
of New York at Binghamton. He has been guest conductor at area all-state
festivals in the upstate area. He has performed at the Festival of Two
Worlds in Spoleto, Italy, and toured Europe as soloist with the Ostschweizer
Kammerorchester.
Marla Rathbun, Poughkeepsie, N.Y., music coordinator
and ensemble coach at Poughkeepsie Day School, teaches a large private
studio. She is first violinist of the Taghkanic String Quartet; member
of the Aurora Quintet and the Amor Artis Orchestra; principal second violinist
with the Stamford Chamber Orchestra and the Connecticut Grand Opera; freelances
in the greater New York area. Rathbun received her B.M.E. from Capital
University, then worked as principal second violinist with the Savannah
Symphony and Savannah String Quartet and taught at Savannah State College.
While earning her M.M. in violin performance at Southern Illinois University,
she was assistant concert-master of the St. Louis Philharmonic Orchestra.
As a Peace Corps volunteer in Quito, Ecuador, she played in and directed
a small chamber orchestra, performed with a string quartet as first violinist,
and was concertmaster of the Quito National Symphony. She is a former
student of Raphael Bronstein and Ariana Bronne.
